Biography

“I did this painting back in 1962 as a 1st Lieutenant in the 417th Tactical Fighter Squadron stationed at Ramstein, Germany. I think it portrays the essential tools/items associated with a fighter pilot’s theme. There is a lengthy history behind this painting.

The original was painted by a 1st Lieutenant in the 10th Squadron while at Toule Rosiere in the late 1950s… it was very good. [The painting] included a blue helmet and he had it professionally reproduced. Copies were seen on many Officer’s Club walls.

My first effort was identical but I painted the 417th TFS’s dark helmet colors and mounted it on my wall in my apartment. A friend and fellow pilot (Mack Angel) asked me to paint a copy for him. This new version was markedly different and I like it better than the original. I painted a blue sky with the sun reflecting off the belly of three F-100’s in the background. Then I opened the scotch bottle, placed two shots in each glass and added a touch of lipstick to one glass. The personal touch added to the image, I think. I charged him $25.00 and then Dink Engle, a bachelor, said he had to have one too so I painted the last copy for him for $35.00.

Years went by and I realized I had not retained the “new” version for myself! I called Dink and offered to give him $500 for his painting. He declined but offered to have a printing company try a reproduction. I had six made and sold them at my cost of $50 plus shipping. The quality of the repro is not quite as sharp as the original but respectable. Jack Chain purchased one!”
