Joe attended USAF pilot training as an Aviation Student (USAF, SSgt) in class 60-F flying the T-37 and T-33. He checked out in the F-100C with the New Jersey ANG.  He later flew ANG C-97’s, KC-97’s and C-130’s in the Pacific and in Southeast Asia.

He was hired by TWA in 1966, flying Super Constellations, 707’s, 727’s, 1011’s. Additionally, he flew the 747 as a Captain and Check Airman.
