Jim P. Lancaster, Col USAF, Ret, “Headed West” on July 26, 2009.

SUMTER — Jim P. Lancaster, 77, husband of Sherbie Lancaster, died Sunday, July 26, 2009, at his home. Born January 12, 1932, in Pyatt, Arkansas, he was a son of the late Thurmond Winfield Lancaster and the late Ressie Melton Lancaster. Jim served his country for thirty years in the U.S. Air force where he flew fighter aircraft. He retired with the rank of colonel on August 10, 1981, at Shaw Air Force Base.

Survivors include his wife of Sumter; two sons, Ken Lancaster (Dianne) of Raleigh, NC, and Bob Lancaster of Columbia; a sister, Mary Walton of Dallas, TX; a brother, John Lancaster (Catherine) of Austin, TX; a niece, Nancy Norwood and family of Austin; and two nephews, Mike Lancaster and family of Richardson, TX, and Pat Lancaster and family of Plano, TX.

A memorial service [was] held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with Dr. Clay Smith officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tuomey Hospice, 115 North Sumter Street, Suite 410, Sumter, SC 29150.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.
