On June 12, 1967, Capt Moore was making his first run flying F-100 #55-3549 over suspected military buildings about 15 miles south of Saigon, close to Ap Bac. He was flying at 150 feet and dropping napalm. The aircraft was hit by automatic weapons fire. His F-100 was observed by the lead aircraft to impact the ground and burst into flames. His body was recovered.

At the time of his death Capt. Moore was married with 2 children. His son Scott went on to become a Navy SEAL.

Capt. Charles Larry Moore is buried at the United States Air Force Academy Cemetery Colorado Springs, El Paso County, CO.
