Bill Neuens became an aircraft mechanic and taught himself to fly at the North Dakota ranch where he grew up. He served for thirty-one years in the Colorado Air National Guard, progressing from wingman to Wing Commander, maintaining fighter pilot combat readiness throughout his service.

Bill went to fly for United Airlines for more than 33 years, retiring in 1992.
