“Major General Robert P. Meyer Jr. was the mobilization assistant to the deputy commander in chief, United States Transportation Command, and commander, Joint Transportation Reserve Unit, USTRANSCOM, Scott Air Force Base, Ill.

General Meyer enlisted in the 121st Tactical Fighter Wing, Ohio ANG, at Lockbourne Air Force Base, Ohio, in June 1965. Following Air Force Basic Training and commissioning he attended undergraduate pilot training at Moody Air Force Base, Ga., and earned his wings in 1967. After completion of F-100 Gunnery School at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., in February 1968 he joined his ANG unit which had been recalled to active duty at Kunsan Air Base, Korea, for the Pueblo Crisis for one year. Prior to final current assignment General Meyer served as the commander of the 121st Air Refueling Wing (121 ARW), Ohio Air National Guard (ANG), located at Rickenbacker International Airport, Columbus, Ohio.” (source: https://www.nationalguard.mil/portals/31/Features/ngbgomo/bio/2/22.html)

Meyer, Robert (Bob) L.,  Major General (Ret), Headed West on August 12, 2014

Major General (Ret.) Robert (Bob) L. Meyer, 88, passed away on August 12, 2014, following a brief illness. Born November 12, 1925 in Pottsville, PA, he was the loving son of the late Roland F. and Louise (Bellon) Meyer. Bob enlisted in the Army in 1944 after graduating from Pottsville High School and was discharged in 1946 at the rank of Staff Sergeant. He joined the 40th Infantry Div. of the California Army National Guard in 1946 and commissioned a 2nd Lt in 1947. He served on active duty in Europe, Japan, and Korea. During his career with the CANG, MG Meyer served in various leadership capacities in the 40th Infantry Division and the Southern Emergency Operations Headquarters. Prior to retiring in 1984, his service culminated in appointments as Division Commander of the 40th Infantry (mechanized) and subsequently as Commander, State Area Command, Headquarters. MG Meyer earned an AB from USC (1950), and a JD from UCLA in 1955; he also graduated from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the U.S. Army War College. His decorations and awards include the California National Guard Medal of Merit; Meritorious Service Medal (two oak leaf clusters); Army Commendation Medal; Good Conduct Medal; American Campaign Medal; European- African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal; World War II Victory Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Army of Occupation Medal (Germany and Japan); Armed Forces Reserve Medal; Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal; Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation; and the United Nations Service Medal. In his civilian career, Bob was employed as an attorney by the California Dept. of Transportation. He retired in 1991 from the San Diego Office where he was the Assistant Chief Legal Counsel. Bob’s favorite pastimes were attending the symphony and opera, enjoying a great restaurant and fine wine with friends, and cultivating bonsai; he was a member and former officer of the San Diego Bonsai Club. Survivors: Bob was a loving brother to Jean Yocom; and uncle to nieces Bonnie Coker, Joanne Bosack, Carolyn Yocom and Dorothea Stark; nephews Gary Meyer, H. Luther Yocom, Jr., and John Yocom; and to many great-nieces and -nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Louise Schuster; brothers, Roland, Jr., and James; and niece, Nancy Gangloff. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. A burial service, with full military honors, will take place at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego on Monday, September 29, 2014, at 12:30 PM.
