Today in History – July 15, 1967 – T.H. Herndon ejects from F-100D #563275

15 July 1967 – T.H. Herndon was flying F-100D #563275. Enroute to a target of 150 Vietcong in a treeline, he was hit by 57mm AAA during a climb. He ejected and was recovered by USAF Helo. Herndon was serving with the 531st TFS out of Bien Hoa AB.

Biography
Pilot Information

After serving in the USAF, in 1967 Capt. Hugh Schoelzel went on to pilot for Trans World Airlines. In 2000 he was named vice president-corporate safety of Trans World Airlines. At the time he was a Boeing 757/767 captain and chief pilot for the Eastern U.S. He retired in 2004.

“In his retirement he flew an original version of the English Channel-spanning Bleriot monoplane at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome’s weekly air shows.” (1)

Hugh and his wife Ronnie are known in their community of Litchfield, CT as having an amazing garden and are part of many civic organizations.
