“At the age of seventeen, Victor joined the United States Air Corp. Victor served over the next 29 years as a pilot, seeing action during World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Era. He retired on September 1, 1971 at the rank of Major.

He was united in marriage to Carroll R. Walters on June 15, 1957 at Los Angeles, California. Following their marriage they made their home in Wrightwood, California where Vic was stationed at George Air Force Base. The following years would involve numerous moves including being stationed in The Philippines for two and a half years while he flew in Vietnam. The family returned to Travis Air Force Base until 1971 when Victor retired from the Air Force and the family moved to Oregon, settling in the Gaston community. Victor and Carroll celebrated their 49th Wedding Anniversary this past June.

Among his interests, Victor enjoyed farming, having raised beef cattle over the years. He also enjoyed caring for the wildlife on the farm as well as playing golf.” (1)

MAJ. VICTOR H. “VIC” WIRTA, JR.

Maj. Victor H. “Vic” Wirta, Jr., 81, a resident of the Gaston community, died Monday morning, January 22, 2007 at Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital in Portland.

MAJ. VICTOR HERBERT “VIC” WIRTA, JR. was born March 1, 1925 in San Francisco, California, the son of Victor H. Wirta, Sr. and Rauha (Juhola) Wirta. He was raised and received his early education in New York City and Trumansburg, New York. He attended Brainerd Junior College and graduated in June of 1949. He completed his college education at Oklahoma City University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1951.

During this time he was also a member of the Oklahoma National Guard. At the age of seventeen, Victor joined the United States Air Corp. He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Rauha Wirta and a son, Kirt Russell Wirta in February of 1981.
Victor is survived by his wife, Carroll R. Wirta, of the family home in Gaston; four daughters, Karen N. Wirta of St. Helens, Oregon; Kristine L. Wirta of Vancouver, Washington; Kim V. Morse and her husband, Douglas, of Portland, Oregon; and Kathryn L. Wirta and her fiancé, David C. Csergei of Hillsboro, Oregon; and two grandchildren, Kevin M. Bivens of Phoenix, Arizona and Brianna M. Pruitt of St. Helens, Oregon.

The family suggests that remembrances may be made to the Neuro & Trauma ICU, 7th Floor, OHSU, 3181 SW Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, Oregon 97239, in his memory.

Graveside Services with full Military Honors will be held on Monday, January 29, 2007 at 1:00 PM at the Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 SE Mt. Scott Blvd. in Portland with Reverend Daniel Bohlken of the Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Forest Grove, officiating. Interment will follow at the cemetery. Family and friends are invited to attend a reception immediately following the cemetery rites, to be held at the home of Doug and Kim Morse, 9816 NW Nottage Drive in Portland.
