19 June 1962 – Two Republic F-105 Thunderchiefs out of Nellis AFB, NV, are lost in separate accidents near Indian Springs, NV on this date.

F-105D-5-RE, 59-1740, is lost near Indian Springs due to control failure, the pilot successfully ejecting.

F-105D-6-RE, 60-0410, was written off at Indian Springs due to engine fire, the pilot ejected successfully.

Following this pair of major accidents, all F-105B and D aircraft are grounded for the correction of chafing and flight control deficiencies. The project, called “Look Alike” started in July 1962, and was expected to be completed quickly but due to continued operational problems, it grew to an extensive two-year modification program costing $51 million.
