Wallis R. Calvert LTC., USAF, retired, 73, of Winter Haven, passed away on Saturday, July 27, 2002, after a long battle with cancer. A highly decorated pilot and a veteran of the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War, Lt. Colonel Calvert was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He served his country for 24 years before retiring in 1975. He was a past member of the American Legion Post 148 in Riverview and currently is a member of the American Legion Post 8 in Winter Haven. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge 1023 and the Elk Lodge 1672, also of Winter Haven.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara of Winter Haven; his sons, Randy Calvert and his wife Karen of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., Ronald Calvert of Riverview; stepsons, Barry and Danny Strine of Winter Haven; step-daughter, Lisa Strine-Lassi of Lakeland; two brothers, Leonard Calvert of Fort Walton Beach and George Calvert of Mitchel, Neb.; three grandchildren and four step-grandchildren. One of his children wrote to us saying “My father passed away in 2002. My mother in 1990. Being young during his time in the Air Force I never really knew what he did. He did speak of his work later in life. I have learned a lot from going thru his personal effects. I am very thankful for his efforts and all of you for putting your lives in danger and your service to our country.”
