Dale Leroy Hartman was born April 2, 1935, in Ottumwa, IA. He was the youngest of four children born to Frank and Lulu Hartman of Chillicothe, Iowa.
Dale graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1953 and attended Iowa State University on a track scholarship. He then attended Officer Training School as a USAF Cadet, before serving in the U.S. Air Force and the Iowa Air National Guard for 30 years.

Dale, 80, passed away on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at Arbor Springs in West Des Moines.
Dale was born April 2, 1935, in Ottumwa, to Frank and Lulu Hartman. He graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1953 and attended Iowa State University before serving in the U.S. Air Force and the Iowa Air National Guard.
Dale worked at Ryko Manufacturing, Eagle Iron Works, and the Des Moines Flying Service. During this time he also served in the Iowa Air National Guard for 30 years.
Dale is survived by his wife of 59 years, Charlene; son, Bryan (Joanne) of Mediapolis; daughters, Dala (Mike) Scoblic of Waukee and Tracy (Bruce) Imber of El Cajon, CA; sister, Maycel Rowland of Ottumwa; brother, Dean (Lois) of Ottumwa; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jack of Chillicothe, IA.
Memorial services [were] held on Monday, January 25 at McLaren’s Chapel in West Des Moines. Burial of his cremated remains [were] at Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Ottumwa at a later date.
