Today in History – January 31, 1968 – F-100 pilots Maj Joe Bulger and 1Lt “Fearless” Fred Abrams are given the worst kind of mission

31 January 1968 – On the first full day of the Tet Offensive, Major Joe Bulger (Flight Lead) and 1Lt “Fearless” Fred Abrams were asked to bomb their own base. In the early hours of the day, Vietcong forces had launched an attack on Bien Hoa AB. “The whole east end was hot,” Abrams said.

Major Bakies served his country as an officer in the United States Air Force. He retired at the rank of Major after over twenty–two years of service. Following his retirement from the Air Force, Major Bakies managed the England Air Force Base Officer’s Club from 1971 – 1974.

Major Bakies, age 87, of Alexandria, Louisiana, entered eternal rest on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Bakies was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother. Major Bakies served his country as an officer in the United States Air Force. He retired at the rank of Major in the United States Air Force after over twenty-two years of service. Following his retirement from the Air Force, Major Bakies managed the England Air Force Base Officer’s Club from 1971 – 1974. He was a member of St. Rita’s Catholic Church, Amicus Club and the American Legion.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Joyce; five children; two brothers; a sister; eight grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. Special thanks for the loving care and compassion given by Mr. Bakies’ Angel, Moe Moe Johnson.

Major Bakies is interred at Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Pineville, Louisiana,
