CAPT Roger E. Wichman was a U.S. Air Force pilot serving with the 615th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 35th Tactical Fighter Wing, stationed at Phan Rang Air Base in Ninh Thuan Province, RVN.
On November 9, 1968, CAPT Wichman was flying a USAF North American F-100D Super Sabre (#56-3446) when it was hit by ground fire near the village of Thon Vu Bon, 10 miles southwest of Phan Rang. While returning to base, the engine on the Super Sabre failed and Wichman ejected. He reportedly was fatally injured after being struck by the jettisoned ejection seat. His remains were recovered. Roger Edward Wichman is buried or memorialized at Saint Peters Lutheran Cemetery, Pender, NE, and is honored on the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial in Washington DC. His name is inscribed at VVM Wall, Panel 39w, Line 41.
