Today in History – February 11, 1971 – Capt. Michael Donald McGovern is KIA as F-100 # 552901 crashes on landing

Mike entered active duty in November 1963 to attend Undergraduate Pilot Training at Moody AFB, GA as a member of Class 65D. His first assignment was as a T-38 instructor with the 3646th Pilot Training Squadron at Laughlin AFB, TX.

CPT Michael D. McGovern was serving with the 612th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 35th Tactical Fighter Wing. On February 11, 1971, CPT McGovern was piloting an F-100D (#55-2901) when he was involved in a landing accident at Pleiku Airfield in Pleiku Province, RVN. McGovern suffered fatal injuries in the incident.

Michael is honored on the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial in Washington DC. Name inscribed at VVM Wall, Panel 05w, Line 96.
