Today in History – July 28, 1968 – Major Elwin Roy Shain is KIA after a strafing sortie over Phuoc Long.

Elwin Roy Shain was born on August 27, 1931, in Iowa City, IA. Elwin had enlisted in the Air Force and entered via Regular Military. He began his Vietnam tour on August 30, 1967, as a Major with the 7th Air Force, 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing, 510th Tactical Fighter Squadron. out of Bien Hoa AB.

Flying F-100D # 553608 as Buzzard 6 he was on a strafing mission to hit a bunker supply area when his aircraft was hit in the right wing by gunfire over Phuoc Long province. The F-100 crashed and Shain was reported missing and ultimately declared dead on July 28, 1968. Recorded circumstances attributed to: “Died while missing in action, air crash on land”.

Elwin is honored on the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial in Washington DC. Name inscribed at VVM Wall, Panel 50w, Line 27.
