Today In History – October 13, 1932 – An autogyro makes a loop and you can have a newer model.

13 October 1932 “Godfrey Webster Dean, pilot for Fairchild Aircraft Co. of Longueuil, Quebec, Canada, became the first pilot to loop a rotorcraft when he performed the maneuver in a Pitcairn PCA-2 autogyro over the Pitcairn Aircraft, Inc. airfield near Willow Grove, Pennsylvania.

The autogyro was considered to be the next innovation in personal flight. A Pitcairn Aircraft, Inc., advertisement from 1932 said “Requiring little room to take off and even less to land, the pilot owner can fly directly to the scene of almost any sporting event.”” (1)

Now you can have the modern version!

This past week the designer/builder of “BlackFly” [Opener, Inc], a personal VTOL “Personal Aerial Vehicle” announced he would begin pre-selling the aircraft. Similar to an ultra-light, no pilot’s license is required.  Save your pennies, Black Fly says the model will be around the price of a luxury SUV,  though there is a 3-D printer model available. If you want to purchase one, you must be on their mailing list. Sign up at Opener Mailing List
