MEMORIAL DAY 2018
Formerly called, “Decoration Day,” and established to decorate the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers, the last Monday in May is now called, “Memorial Day,” on which we honor the memory of those who have fallen during service to their country. The shopping malls will be full of sales; streets full of parades, flags, bent veterans and marching bands; hot dogs in backyards; laughing children; some fireworks; baseball games; small flags by white grave markers in Arlington and military cemeteries across the country.
For we members of the Super Sabre Society, today has a special meaning – memories of friends gone, but well-remembered. We see their faces, hear their voices and remember their laughs – our friends, our classmates, squadron mates, wingmen, commanders. We flew together in good weather and bad, over land and water, day and night. We drank together in bars from Rangoon to Racine; deployed to Europe and North Africa, South America, the Middle East, and Asia. We sat nuclear alert and fought together dodging AAA, ground fire and SAMs, and a couple even had MiG encounters. We loved tankers, Sandys, Jolly Greens and PJ’s. We ran to bunkers under rocket and mortar attack. We scrambled from alert and pulled out all stops to support our ground troops.

Vietnam Veteran’s Day
Much has been written about the war – who won, who lost; whether we should have been there at all. We tried to stop the supplies coming south; we supported our troops on the ground; we fought with and for our South Vietnamese allies. We did it day and night

The 50th Anniversary of the TET Offensive at the Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum
This event was managed by the Bob “Hoppy” Hopkins from start to finish: the concept, the artist, the financing, getting Udvar-Hazy approval, dinner, et al. The airplane, the lightbox, the airfoils, the now-enshrined and engraved Wall of Honor are all a fitting SSS monument to our legacies and heritage.
The Misty Pilot’s bank account was used to buy a pig-in-the-poke, just trusting the Smithsonian staff with $10,000 and a couple of concept sketches rushed into production. The museum came through and the lightbox dramatically enhances the painting!

When a Father is “Lost in Combat” as Told By His Son

Duane and his F-100 in Vietnam
This story is from this month’s featured video by Duane Baker’s son David. David was 5-years-old when his father was “Lost in Combat”.
Captain Duane S. Baker, United States Air Force, loved to fly. When he was four, his mom, “Lila” Marie Baker took him to an airshow. Fascinated, he asked her “what made it stay up.” From then on, all he ever wanted was to be a pilot. If he could connect it back to airplanes in school, he would, frustrating his teachers. One teacher assigned him a report about Native Americans, thinking this would give him a break from all the flying business. He found a Native American who was a pilot in WWII and wrote about the plane he flew. He graduated from Oregon State with an A average in Aeronautical Engineering. He joined the Air Force and wanted to fly the F-100 Super Sabre, known to pilots as the “The Hun”. In pilot training, he worked hard and graduated third in his class behind two former Air Force navigators, and second in the gunnery school class at Luke AFB behind an experienced pilot who was transitioning to fighters.
